Mira Nair was nominated for an Academy Award for her first feature, Salaam Bombay! in 1989, the film is considered a classic today. Nair is known for her lush, vibrant films, from Mississippi Masala (Denzel Washington) to The Perez Family (Marisa Tomei), Kama Sutra, Hysterical Blindness (Golden Globe nominee, Uma Thurman), as well as Monsoon Wedding, one of the top grossing foreign films of all time and winner of the Golden Lion in 2001. Her last film, The Namesake, was one of the most beloved films of 2007. In October 2009, Nair brings us the sweeping epic, Amelia, the story of the American aviatrix Amelia Earhart, starring Hilary Swank with Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor.
