A tender (too much? encouraging, at least) and rousing call to filmmakers and producers. Couldn’t agree more. I’m a producer now working on innovating digital distribution precisely because none of the current models are viable for independent filmmakers who are now forced to self-market and self-distribute. Thank you for recognizing the problem and speaking up.

Finally someone gets it not only right but writes it so skillfully and includes the “be famous already” factor I always wish would be included in these kinds of articles/examinations. Bravo. I read the linked articles too, also great. I really love the term that was used, middle class filmmakers. I’ve always said and loved that philosophy.

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. We seem to be caught between the ever-consolidating media distribution landscape, the rapid pace of technological change, the retreat of distributors from doing the work they’re supposed to do, the need to innovate beyond genres and stars WHILE at the same time being told we have to PICK a genre and a star… innovate or die, indeed. Thank you for speaking up for us.

One genre I am rather amazed to not find is ‘visionary political comedy’. All the (few) political films I know of are critiques; but none of them provide a vision forward. Am I missing something?
