2016 Filmmaker Labs Curriculum
Selected Lab Fellows are notified of their acceptance by IFP.
Time Warner Completion Lab
Documentary: May 9 – 13
Narrative: May 23 – 27
The first module of the Independent Filmmaker Labs gathers all Lab Fellows for an intensive five-day program focusing on the nuts-and-bolts of finishing your film. Led by a variety of industry experts, the workshops in the Completion Lab cover topics such as editing, color correction, sound design, deliverables, and more.
Lab Fellows will be asked to send preliminary pitch materials (a logline, a still, a clip, etc.) to their Lab Leader and IFP programming team. After reviewing the materials, the Lab Leader and IFP programmer will provide feedback to the materials. These consultations are done in preparation for the Fellows’ participation in IFP Independent Film Week.
September 17 – 22, 2016
IFP Film Week
All Lab Fellows are invited to IFP Film Week, where projects take meetings with relevant distributors, sales agents, funders, and festival programmers as part of the Project Forum.
November 7 – 11, 2016
Marketing & Distribution Lab
In the final module of the Filmmaker Labs, Fellows are asked to present their plans for the marketing and distribution of their films. Each presentation is led by an industry expert who provides specific feedback on each presentation.
IFP provides each project with an Alumni Mentor: a filmmaker who’s gone through the Labs and can speak to how a filmmaker can best take advantage of the experience. In addition, IFP Programming Staff provides year-round support as needed, advising fellows and advocating on their behalf. IFP also promotes Lab alumni films to its members and constituency during their film festival run and as they become available to audiences through traditional and non-traditional platforms.
Commitment to Diversity
As part of IFP’s ongoing commitment to diversity, the Independent Filmmaker Labs seeks to ensure that at least 50% of the participating projects have an inclusive range of races, genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and physical abilities in key creative positions.
