IFP's 31st Annual Independent Film Week Line-Up Announced

IFP's 31st Annual Independent Film Week Line-Up Announced

August 11, 2009, NY, NY

IFP, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of independent filmmakers, announced today the line-up of its Project Forum of the 31st Annual Independent Film Week taking place in NYC September 19 – 24.

Additionally, it announced the expansion of its strategic relationship with the Sundance Institute; and new partnerships with B-Side, the four-year-old tech company which runs websites that handle ticketing and mine audience response data for 250-plus fests in North America, and The Good Pitch, a forum produced by Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation which brings together inspiring social-purpose film projects and a group of expert participants from charities, foundations, brands, government and media to form powerful alliances around groundbreaking films.

Formerly known as the IFP Market, Independent Film Week is the oldest and largest forum in the U.S. and is qualitatively and quantitatively the best and biggest opportunity for an independent filmmaker to connect with industry professionals – including producers, funders, distributors, broadcasters, sales agents and festival programmers. It is the only forum in the U.S. singularly focused on connecting projects still in development with financing and sales opportunities

A total of 116 projects have been invited to the Project Forum. Acceptance is by invitation only, and free of charge to filmmakers. All projects are accepted based on artistic merit. Projects participate in one of three sections: Emerging Narrative (for first-time feature directors currently in post seeking representation, completion funding, and festival invitations), No Borders International Co-Production Market (for producers with partial financing seeking additional partners), and Spotlight on Documentaries (for filmmakers in production, post, or with a completed film seeking financing partners, broadcast/distribution, and festival invitations). (See attached for a complete list of accepted projects).

“IFP’s niche has always been the presentation of projects in development,” says Michelle Byrd, executive director, IFP. “We’re really pleased to extend the efficiency of Independent Film Week to play host to a new strategic partner in The Good Pitch, and to greatly expand our decades-long collaborative relationship with the Sundance Institute. And with the support of B-Side, we will dramatically increase our technical proficiency and tools.”

NEW STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

The Sundance Institute has been the sole U.S. partner on IFP’s No Borders International Co-Production Market since its inception in 1994. Beginning in 2009, it additionally became the sole conduit through which U.S.-based producers could apply to the section. A total of 10 projects and filmmakers from the 2009 Sundance Directors Lab and the Sundance Creative Producing Initiative have been accepted into No Borders. The roster of previous projects which have either begun at the Sundance Labs and then went on to No Borders or vice versa is long and contains a number of exciting and diverse voices behind projects such as MARIA FULL OF GRACE, BROTHER TO BROTHER, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, and most recently, HOWL.

Well established with their B-Side Festival Genius, an interactive festival schedule that engages audience members and filmmakers with social features such as ratings, reviews, recommendations, and blogs, and with more than 4 million film fans passing through their website to date, IFP has embarked on a strategic alliance with the technology company. B-Side is building out the back-end of Project Forum information, which is available, in advance, to registered industry attending the event. For the industry taking one-on-one meetings, it means a one-stop repository for information and video reels of select footage from documentaries and/or previous narrative work.

Following inaugural editions at Hot Docs in Toronto in April and Silverdocs in Washington, DC in June, The Good Pitch will make its final stop in North America during IFP’s Independent Film Week in NYC. The Good Pitch in North America is a partnership between the Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation and the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program. The day-long program will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2009. As the host partner, IFP has collaborated on the selection of the soon-to-be announced projects that will be invited to pitch their films and outreach campaigns to an invited audience, in order to amplify the impact of their social-issue documentary. The Good Pitch in North American is supported by The Fledgling Fund, Working Films, Chicken & Egg Pictures and anonymous donors.

THE PROJECT FORUM: EMERGING NARRATIVE

10 films, all at the rough cut stage and alumni of IFP’s June Independent Filmmaker Lab, have been invited to take part in Emerging Narrative. Projects will take one-on-one industry meetings as well as participate in an industry showcase screening and an outdoor public showcase presentation on Sunday, September 20 in conjunction with Rooftop Films.

IFP’s Independent Filmmaker Labs (for narratives and documentaries) are the only national program connecting mentors and projects before they are submitted to festivals. All are low-budget (<$1m), independently produced films by first-time feature directors at the rough assembly stage.

Recent Narrative Lab alumni include festival favorites such as ZERO BRIDGE (2008 Venice, 2009 Karlovy Vary and LA Film Festival), THE NEW YEAR PARADE (2008 Slamdance Grand Jury Prize winner), HALF LIFE (2008 Sundance), SORRY, THANKS (2009 SXSW), ST. NICK (2009 SXSW) and WE ARE THE MODS (2009 OUTFEST Audience Award and Outstanding Screenplay winner).

THE PROJECT FORUM: 15th ANNUAL NO BORDERS INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTION MARKET

No Borders is the premiere international co-production market in the U.S., connecting U.S. and international narrative projects at the script stage with financiers and buyers.

27 projects have been invited for this year’s edition of No Borders, including 60% represented by international producers; 40% by U.S.-based producers.

Program partners on No Borders include established funding bodies (Telefilm Canada, UK Film Council, Germany’s Filmstiftung NRW, Australia’s Film Victoria and NSW Film and Television Office, the New Zealand Film Commission, and the National Film and Video Foundation in South Africa) and support organizations (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen/ACE and CineMart). The Sundance Institute is the program’s only U.S. partner and sole conduit for U.S.-based producer participation.

For the third year, the UK Film Council’s New Cinema Fund is sending established independent producers Laura Hastings Smith (Steve McQueen’s HUNGER, Hideo Nakata’s (THE RING), upcoming CHATROOM) and Gayle Griffiths (BAFTA award-winning KISS OF LIFE). This year’s invited producers will take No Borders meetings for a number of projects on their slates.

Recently distributed No Borders alumni include: CHERI (Miramax Films), FROZEN RIVER (Sony Pictures Classics), HALF NELSON (ThinkFilm), MARIA FULL OF GRACE (HBO Films/Fine Line Features), ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW (IFC Films), LEMON TREE (IFC Films), THE SYRIAN BRIDE (Koch Lorber Films), BROTHER TO BROTHER (Wolfe Releasing) and IRINA PALM (Strand Releasing).

THE PROJECT FORUM: SPOTLIGHT ON DOCUMENTARIES

Spotlight on Documentaries is the premiere forum in the U.S. connecting documentary works-in-progress (in development through post-production) with financiers, distributors, broadcasters and buyers.

79 projects have been invited to participate in Spotlight on Documentaries, including projects from IFP’s May Independent Filmmaker Lab. The projects are evenly split between those in production, and those in post-production.

Recent theatrically distributed alumni first presented at Spotlight on Documentaries include: Academy Award-nominated THE GARDEN (Oscilloscope), A JIHAD FOR LOVE (First Run Features), FRONTRUNNERS (Oscilloscope), PLANET B-BOY (Elephant Eye Films), DAUGHTERS OF WISDOM (Seventh Art Releasing), PRAYING WITH LIOR (First Run Features), BLESSED IS THE MATCH: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF HANNAH SENESH (Balcony Releasing), MAD HOT BALLROOM (Paramount Classics), MOVING MIDWAY (First Run Features). Recent broadcast acquisitions include: HBO (FIXER: THE TAKING OF AJMED NASHBANDI; YOUTH KNOWS NO PAIN; CAT DANCERS; and the Academy Award-winning FREEHELD); P.O.V. (NEW MUSLIM COOL, THE WAY WE GET BY, MADE IN L.A., WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE); Independent Lens (LIONESS, P-STAR RISING, GARBAGE DREAMS, WHATEVER IT TAKES); and Sundance Channel (THE GREENING OF SOUTHIE, RED WITHOUT BLUE).

About IFP (Independent Filmmaker Project)
After debuting with a program in the 1979 New York Film Festival, the nonprofit IFP has evolved into the nation’s oldest and largest organization of independent filmmakers, and also the premier advocate for them. Since its start, IFP has supported the production of 7,000 films and provided resources to more than 20,000 filmmakers’ voices that otherwise might not have been heard. IFP believes that independent films broaden the palette of cinema, seeding the global culture with new ideas, kindling awareness, and fostering activism. Currently, IFP represent a network of 10,000 filmmakers in New York City and around the world. Through its workshops, seminars, conferences, mentorships, and Filmmaker Magazine, IFP schools its members in the art, technology, and business of independent filmmaking (there are special programs to promote racial, ethnic, religious, ideological, gender, and sexual diversity). IFP builds audiences by hosting screenings, often in collaboration with other cultural institutions and also bestows the Gotham Independent Film Awards™, the first honors of the film awards season. When all is said and done, IFP fosters the development of 350 feature and documentary films each year. www.ifp.org
