"Black filmmakers say the wave of 2013 releases was built in large part on the creativity that has flourished on the independent-film circuit, which has become a laboratory of sorts for more prominent African-American-themed productions," The New York Times' Michael Cipely wrote earlier this year. With all these filmmakers’ buzzworthy films, and more, there should be no doubt that some of the most exciting new independent stories are coming from African-American filmmakers. Hear from the artists behind these projects discuss their experiences in the independent film world, and as culture creators for our generation.

Moderator Tambay Obenson Editor/Writer, Shadow And Act LLC Tambay Obenson launched Shadow and Act in 2009, after self-financing and releasing his first feature, and forming a distribution company, inspired by the lack of awareness of independent films about people of African descent. Shadow And Act has since become the primary destination for black cinema on the web.
Panelists Nekisa Cooper Producer, Northstar Pictures Inc After coaching college basketball and working in Brand Management for such companies as Colgate Palmolive and L’Oreal, Nekisa Cooper found the perfect intersection of her skill sets in Creative Producing. Based in New York, she produced the Sundance Channel documentary feature EVENTUAL SALVATION and the Focus Features-released narrative feature PARIAH. In addition she has produced several shorts for writer/director Dee Rees, including PARIAH, COLONIAL GODS and ORANGE BOW. Notably, she was the recipient of the 2013 Fox HBCU Alliance Media Grant in partnership with Film Independent and a producing fellow for the 2010 IFP Trans Atlantic Partners Program, the 2009 IFP Cinemart/Rotterdam Producing Lab, the 2009 Film Independent Project Involve Program and the 2008 Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab. Nekisa is in post-production on the feature documentary THE UGLY DOLL and in development for Dee Rees’s third feature, BOLO. Nekisa holds a BA from William & Mary and an MBA from Clark Atlanta University.
Shaka King Writer/Director/Producer, Newlyweeds Movie LLC Shaka King’s feature length debut, Newlyweeds, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where it was acquired for distribution by Phase 4 Films. It will be opening exclusively at the Film Forum in NYC on September 18th. Shaka received his M.F.A from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Terence Nance is an artist whose practice includes installation, performance, music, and moving images. His first feature film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, is an IFP Narrative lab alumnus and premiered in the New Frontier section of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The film is available on DVD this October.
Yoruba Richen President, Promised Land Film Yoruba Richen is a filmmaker has directed films in the U.S. and abroad. Her latest film, The New Black premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and went on to win Audience Awards at AFI Docs and Frameline LGBT Film Festival. It will open at Film Forum in February.
