Keynote: Glen Basner

Bruno Walter Auditorium - 111 Amsterdam Avenue
Production, film sales, and distribution. All are equally important to the film industry in their own ways. It may seem impossible that one can do all three of these things, but that is exactly what Glen Basner has done with FilmNation Entertainment - a global, full-service film company. With such a diverse set of skills offered by one name, FilmNation has been able to work with some of the most-renowned filmmakers working today including Terrence Malick and Pedro Almodóvar, and with films from exciting emerging filmmakers including Jeff Nichols' "Mud" and J.C. Chandor's upcoming "All is Lost." Glen Basner, who founded the company in 2008, will discuss what FilmNation means for the film industry, and what more he hopes to accomplish in the future.
Glen Basner is the Chief Executive Officer of FilmNation Entertainment, one of the leading independent international sales & distribution and production companies in the world. The company was founded in 2008 by Basner, who is widely regarded as one of the preeminent international sales agents and creative professionals operating in the film business today.
FilmNation titles have grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and the future looks to be even more successful. The company’s diversified global sales slate has included such previous releases as Academy Award® Best Picture winner The King’s Speech to the commercial phenomenon Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh. FilmNation also serves as a first-class production operation tasked with sourcing, developing, packaging, and producing commercially viable films, including Jeff Nichols’ recently released film Mud starring Matthew McConaughey, a 2012 Cannes competition film.
FilmNation’s upcoming sales line-up showcases the work of many of today’s most exciting, established and up-and-coming filmmakers, and includes three 2013 Cannes Official Selections: Alexander Payne’s Nebraska starring Bruce Dern; Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring starring Emma Watson; and J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost starring Robert Redford; as well as Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson, an In Competition film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and an Official Selection of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Prior to FilmNation, Basner was President, International for The Weinstein Company (TWC), where he oversaw all international operations for TWC and Dimension Films. His responsibilities included the exploitation of all TWC and Dimension films abroad in all media, which spanned across the sales, marketing, and distribution functions within those companies. Before joining TWC, Basner was Executive Vice President, International Sales & Distribution at Focus Features. Basner transitioned to his role at Focus after quickly rising up the ranks to become the head of international sales at the venerable New York independent film company Good Machine, which was acquired by Universal to create Focus Features in 2002.
